I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference, especially on a generic, fast machine. Instead, you'll mostly lose a lot of time every time you want to install an update that depends on quite some packages, and as such stop updating regularly (because it takes too long), which is a bad thing. And unless you build everything using ./configure && make (which is hell) instead of using package management tools, you won't learn anything either.
